Mental health professionals help and support their clients to become their healthiest and most content selves.  However, in giving of themselves- mentally, emotionally, and physically, mental health professionals frequently neglect to replenish and re- energize themselves.  Giving away and sharing their energy with others without having ways of giving back to themselves may lead to feelings of compassion fatigue.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Be able to identify causes and symptoms of burnout and compassion fatigue and will explore the similarities and differences between the two.
  2. Introduce holistic approaches to self- care, including meditation and guided imagery; various types of exercise/energetic movement (yoga, Pilates, tai chi, and qi gong), and; the use of essential oils and herbal teas and supplements.
  3. Establish ways in which these techniques could be used to help clients.
